Girls Aloud - no! They shouldn't be allowed!! Here we go again with yet another abysmal TV reality pop group (Liberty X excluded). Not only are we privy to the selection and audition process we then have to see and hear these desperate starlets performing everywhere and anywhere. I must admit I didn't pay much attention to the last series of pop stars/pop idols, or whatever show they appeared on. But the other day I was watching a chat show that featured their manager as a guest. I soon picked up that there has been some rivalry between the two groups that were selected from the show.. an all male group v the all female group. Apparently the girls are on a winning streak (?) while the boys claim to fame is pretty much a non-starter. Well I think I'm within my rights to question exactly how successful these girls really are. I seem to vaguely recall a single being released around the beginning of the year/end of last year, but I have absolutely no recollection of what the song was like. The single that's currently being drummed into us is dire. The moment I heard it, without realising who the 'artist' was (I use the word loosely), it struck me that the single was desperately trying to be a girlie anthem song. Like many successful songs before it, I sensed it's need to appeal as a 'girl power' song. With the much heard 'mama said daddy said' lines it was reaching up to the classics I remember as a teenager such as Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls just want to have fun' and Billy Piper's 'Cus I want to' Ok, perhaps not Billy. Love them or hate them, these songs, such as Madonna's 'Papa don't Preach' will always be replayed years after their release. But as with all dead 'boy/girl bands' before them (5ive, 911, Orange Orange, Sugar etc) don't expect to hear any Girls Aloud songs being played on the radio in 5 years time. The fact that this song has reached number two in the charts does not have any bearing on how great this group are, it just highlights how pap the charts are currently. I'm also fully aware of how the audience of these programmes, having been part of the voting process, now feel as though they are part of the family and will listen and love unconditionally. It's quite apparent and openly discussed that the manufactured world that is pop is greatly dependent on how they are portrayed in the press - good marketing is paramount. So the girls have been successful (as expressed by their own manager) largely due to the sassy image depicted in their (not so) private lives. Smacking someone in the face in a nightclub and being banged up for a night has it's advantages too ie. you will sell more singles! So let's not forget how we should achieve fame and success. Disregard all that banter about hard work and talent just get ya tits out for the lads, land yourself a front page cover story and Bob's (or Lou in this case) yer uncle. |
