<*dv_3*>Match of the Day <*dv_0*> BBC TV Centre Wood Lane London W11 8QT 3 April, 2003 Dear Sir, I watched your coverage of the England Turkey game last night and I wondered if you might be able to explain to me the purpose of Ian Wright. <*dv_2*> As I am sure you are aware he was part of the three person panel chaired by Gary Lineker to give their views and opinions on the match. However, when asked for his view on the match, Mr Wright repeatedly stated that he was "never one to criticise our boys". <*dv_4*> Perhaps I am grossly misinformed, but are not pundits paid to do just that if the performance merits it? Considering the generous remuneration Mr Wright enjoys from the licence fee paying public pocket, I do not think that it is too much to ask that he be required to offer such an opinion. If he can not, or will not give, an opinion then he should not be employed in this role. However, given the general standard of his contributions I have to wonder if his role as a pundit is in fact salvageable. During the post match analysis, the panel reviewed the goals, including the David Beckham penalty. As the kick was viewed in slow motion, Mr Wright's sole contribution was, and I quote, "boom". Given that Mr Wright can offer neither criticism or insightful commentary I have to wonder what role he occupies. From your coverage it appears it is simply to allow other guests to talk about how excited he gets whilst England play. I am afraid I can only conclude that your coverage would be greatly improved if Mr Wright were relieved of any involvement. <*dv_1*> Yours faithfully <*dv_5*> The Jilted Barfly |
