Taking 'big-boned' to the
next level...

Now We Know Who Ate All The Pies

Its amazing what can pass for entertainment nowadays. The word of the moment seems to be reality and thats the only thing we have on TV at the moment. Those that know me will know that Im no fan of reality TV shows. If I watch TV, its because I want to escape reality; not be subjected to even more of it! But even the most avid Big Brother fan will have to admit that the concept of reality TV has gone too far. If you dont believe me, check out Celebrity Fit Club.

<*dv_0*> Tonight was the first time that Ive ever had the misfortune to watch that show. I heard about it some time ago and it sounded like a bad idea then. I heard no more about it, so I assumed that it had been taken off of TV. Not only is it still on TV, but its much worse than I ever thought that it could be.

<*dv_4*> The word celebrity is thrown around so much nowadays. The dictionary defines celebrity as: 1. The state of being famous. 2. A well-known and widely acclaimed person. How the hell could Vanessa Feltz be described as widely acclaimed? The widely, Ill give her as anything involving her appears to be wide. But acclaimed? Worst of all, Vanessa Feltz was one of the few celebrities on this show that Id actually heard of.

The loose implication of the term celebrity aside, I fail to see what TV execs hoped to achieve with Celebrity Fit Club.

<*dv_2*> For those of you that have been fortunate enough not to watch the show, allow me to briefly describe what it all seems to be about. Now, to be fair, I was only able to stomach about fifteen minutes of the show so maybe I cant give an accurate description of the whole show, but I really think that in those fifteen minutes I saw more than enough. Much more than enough

So heres the basic concept of the show: a bunch of fat people want to lose weight. Some want to lose a few pounds, whereas others want to lose a few spare tyres. Therefore we watch them exercise and co-exist together; and then find out how much weight theyve lost that week. Before you try to think of why anyone would want to watch the show, let me tell you a little bit more about it.

<*dv_3*> If this show had been made twenty years ago, it might have worked. But unfortunately, we have to be so politically correct nowadays that any entertainment value the show might have had has been taken away from us. If the main point of the show was to give us all a good laugh at the expense of fat people as they exercised and complained about being hungry, it could have been entertaining. However, to keep the show PC, they ruin it by keeping it serious and were supposed to be entertained by their successes during their arduous struggle to shed that excess weight. There again, this was obvious by their choice of a title: Celebrity Fit Club instead of Really Fat Bastards. I would have preferred the latter, but hey, thats just me.

<*dv_1*> Anyway, after learning about the weeks exploits, we come to their weekly weigh-in. Thats when a team of twelve Russian power-lifters slide the individual over to the cargo scales, with a heavily-armoured stuntman coaxing the celebrity over there with a cake hanging on the end of a fishing rod. They try to create tension by delaying the point where the celebritys weight is announced. Then we learn that theyve lost a couple of pounds. Of course, the celebrity is elated and were all supposed to be impressed that a 30-stone beast has lost a couple of measly pounds, when its obvious that they must lose about five pounds every time they stand up.

And thats it. Thats the whole show. And this has been going on for months.

If I sound a little insensitive over the whole weight issue, I apologise. I truly do feel sorry for anyone that is overweight because of a medical condition. But I have no sympathy for celebrities that have overindulged to this extent. Did they not think at some point, such as the day when they realised they could no longer see their feet, that maybe theyve put on a little bit of weight? And now, Im supposed to watch them lose weight on TV, while they get paid, and Im actually supposed to care?
