<*dv_3*>Harry potter and the Philosopher's Stone

JK Rowling

<*dv_4*>Mock as you will the collection of Harry Potter books, but only after you have took the time to read them. I will not allow you to say a word against them if you have no idea what you're talking about!

JK Rowling has developed a world of witchcraft & wizardry that, unlike a great deal of other films/books, doesn't leave you asking questions concerning the logistics of activities. Her eye for detail is amazing, and many elements that surround this fantasy world and enable it to come alive are not published, but to avoid gaps in her story she's thought of everything JK Rowling lives in Harry's world, and so do I having now read the books!

JK's use of language is very sophisticated so it doesn't feel as though you're actually reading a book which is widely considered to be for children. She's created a complete world which is totally believable and captivating.

The Philospher's Stone is the first of four (to date) books that have been published. In this book we see how Harry is taken to his Aunt & Uncle's house as a baby after his parents have been killed by Lord Voldermont. LV is a very dark & powerful wizard who has used his supremacy to attempt to dominate the wizarding world. Just as he was about to succeed he encountered little Harry Potter, who amazingly stopped LV in his tracks by reflecting his fatal spell. Although not killing LV (as he's killed other wizards their strength has added to his own) it certainly put him out of action for awhile.

<*dv_6*> In the wizarding world the name Harry Potter is as widely known as it is in the real world. All wizards celebrated the downfall of LV and famous Harry Potter was admired for it.

However, since this event Harry has had to grow up with his Aunt and Uncle who are Muggles (non-magical people) and for 11 years has been oblivious to his reputation or his magical abilities, despite strange things occuring when he got angry.

<*dv_0*> On his eleventh birthday Harry was sent for to join the wizard school Hogwarts that his parents had signed him up to. It was on his birthday that he discovered that not only was he a wizard but that he is famous in the wizardry world.

<*dv_2*> The first few chapters of the book are very good, and even though it persuades you to read on, you can't help but wonder what all the fuss is about. Then the book really takes off and you are taken on a whirlwind adventure with cryptic mysteries to solve and battles to be fought which keeps you completely gripped and perched on the end of your seat throughout. It's exciting and pacey and has a complicated plot that would give The Matrix a run for it's money. Good values & morals are reinforced throughout the book, showing that good will always succeed over bad!

<*dv_1*> Believe me you will go to sleep and dream of slaying evil wizards and other people you don't like, with just a flick of your wand.

<*dv_5*> Although the film is very good and is true to the book, the amount of detail contained in the book could never be captivated in a film.. so even if you saw the film and wasn't overly impressed then you must still read the book. It's far better!

I have now managed to enlist a few of my most sceptical friends to read the books. Initially having to tie them to a tree and reading it to them, but now I'm struggling to get them to leave the house they're THAT engrossed.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.
