<*dv_0*>Made in 1999 this low budget political thriller is oddly, disturbingly prophetic. Check this.
The year is 2007. The US is at war in Korea when Iraq (now run by Saddams late son Uday) invades Kuwait on the eve of a presidential election campaign. To make matters worse the current US President has no electoral mandate (nothing to do with Floridian chad this time, just the death of the previous incumbent).
If two thirds of the axis of evil, a president with a questionable mandate werent enough parallels for you the President has to rely on the advice of his Hawkish Chief of Staff (Rumsfeld anyone?) and his black female National Security Adviser (Condoleeaza Rice or what?).
With American forces committed to the conflict in Korea the President has only one option (just like today the UN is completely ignored) threatening Iraq with nuclear armageddon unless they surrender immediately. However things get a bit more tricky when in yet another uncanny presage of the current nadir of Franco American relations Iraq threatens to attack the US with nuclear bombs that it bought from France!!! (Apparently they were offering a two for one deal too good to miss.)
OK, there is nothing unusual with a film based on a realistic political premise but Deterrence then gets a whole lot more sinister with a jaw droppingly shocking ending. In a last minute plot twist it transpires that the Americans secretly sold the Iraqis a batch of defective nuclear weapons. However despite knowing that the Iraqis nuke's can't hurt anyone the President still drops a nuke on Baghdad, explaining later in his address to the nation, Today the United States sent a message to the world. If our national security is threatened we have nuclear weapons and we will use them.
Bloody hell!!! And you thought George Bush was one scary muthaluvva!!! However if the depiction of America undertaking a unilateral nuclear strike wasnt scary enough, then there was one last chilling detail in the film. In the year 2007 Tony Blair is still Prime Minister.
